Mega Crit STS2 Reddit AMA: Pre-Launch Q&A
On February 25, 2026, Mega Crit hosted an Ask Me Anything on r/Games ahead of Slay the Spire 2's Early Access launch. Casey Yano, Jake Card, Demi Montes, Ed Lu, Chris Gortz, and Tup Luisking answered over 50 questions from the community. Here's a distilled summary of the most important STS2 takeaways.
Launch & Pricing
Release Date & Platforms
- Release Time: March 5, 2026 at 10:00 AM PST
- Platforms: Steam (Mac, PC, Linux) at launch; Steam Deck playable. No console release date yet — they'll get through Early Access first.
Price & Achievements
- Price: $24.99 during Early Access (regional pricing applies)
- Achievements: Built but disabled during Early Access until content is finalized
Godot Engine: The Switch Paid Off
The team was candid about moving from Unity to Godot for Slay the Spire 2. The key insight: they'd already converted all content from Scriptable Objects to C# classes before the engine swap, so most of the codebase "just worked" when copied into Godot. They use a custom fork called MegaDot with tweaks for their pipeline.
Why Godot Works for STS2
- Lightweight, cross-platform builds (Mac, PC, Linux) save time on iteration
- Open source meant they never hit the "dead ends" you can hit with Unity — they could dig into the engine when something didn't behave as expected
- Casey's only regret: TextMeshPro. "MSDF in Godot is great tho"
- Ed's favorite feature: The VRAM resource tracker
Co-op Mode: The Details
Matchmaking & Parties
- Matchmaking: Steam friend invites only — no queue, no ELO. Use the StS Discord or subreddit to find players
- Local / couch co-op: Not considered yet; pandemic-era design focused on online. "Could be something for the future"
Progress, Rewards & Saves
- Progress: Card, potion, relic unlocks are shared between solo and co-op. Ascension is separate — solo and co-op each have their own Ascension unlocks; everyone must have an Ascension unlocked to play at that level
- Rewards: Card rewards pull from each player's own unlock pool in STS2 multiplayer; for shared rewards, uses the person with the most unlocks
- Save: Host holds the save; one multiplayer save at a time. Save/load supported, no drop-in/drop-out
Communication & Balance
- Communication: Pings and emotes yes, in-game voice chat no
- Balance: Single-player balance takes priority, but they're actively balancing Slay the Spire 2 multiplayer too
- Enemy scaling: HP and some other attributes scale with player count; bosses got bespoke scaling
Characters & Content
The Defect Returns
- The Defect: Confirmed return. Casey: "The Defect is my favorite. I would never abandon my child." The "dead automaton" shot in the trailer was intentional mystery — Demi takes credit for that
Necrobinder Reworks
- Necrobinder: Went through more reworks than any other STS2 character. Early iterations included two starter relics, and Osty's HP used to persist across combats
Team Favorites & Picks
- Team favorites: Chris likes Silent and Defect from STS1; Demi's favorite to play is Silent (feels even better in STS2), favorite character is The Regent. Jake mains Necrobinder in Slay the Spire 2
- New cards they're excited about: Ed — Rolling Boulder; Jake — Accelerant; Demi — Stardust
- Elite to avoid: Ed: Phantasmal Gardeners
Modding & Balance
Modding Vision for STS2
Modding: "We really just want to empower the modding community to do the coolest shit they can come up with... until nothing stands in the way of putting googly eyes on every square inch of the game."
Balance Philosophy (Same as STS1)
- Design cards that sound cool
- Pick gut-level values
- Internal playtest
- Weekly builds to external playtesters
- Track win rates and fun
- Iterate. "We hope you find ways to break the game" — Anthony gets to nerf when needed
Accessibility & Polish
Screen Readers & Community
- Screen readers: Ed tried Slay the Spire 2 with Windows Narrator — it didn't work well. They'll look into support
- Accessibility story: Jake's dad plays; he only plays Ironclad until he wins every run. Marlowe (Art Director) dubbed him "Irondad"
Cross-Platform & Post-Launch
Saves & Future Content
- Cross-platform saves: A goal for STS2, but "a surprising number of challenges." The aim: play on one device, stop, start on another where you left off
- Neowsletter: Will continue monthly after launch
- Ancients: Demi's favorite new Slay the Spire 2 mechanic — see the November 2025 Neowsletter for details
- Board game: They love the StS1 board game; no STS2 board game anytime soon. Downfall expansion Kickstarter coming
